This book is a really good read—engaging and thought-provoking. It left me with a few reflections: how do we avoid total dependence on any one system today?
How do we keep flexibility so we’re not locked in?
What does it look like to build real leverage through skills and relationships?
And how do we balance comfort with maintaining independence? For example, keeping a job while building savings or a side income.
Overall, it made me think about how to stay in a position of choice, not dependence.
An incredible book with some truly awesome photos and stories behind them.
Many people claim that the NYC subway system is filthy, in disrepair and dangerous. As a 40+ year resident of New York City, I say it is not, and this book proves it. There are color photographs on every page of this book showing trains, tracks, car interiors and stations all over the city.
If you want to convince someone that the subway is world class, this is the book to do it!
”Austin Stone’s The Ghosts of an Empire brings to life the coal mining communities whose fortunes were closely tied to Leeds and the upper Cahaba region. This well-researched and deeply personal work is an important resource for understanding the industrial forces, families, and landscapes that shaped our community. The Leeds Historical Society strongly recommends this book and encourages others to continue preserving the stories of our region.”
